Professional Tips on Retaining choreography for dancers

In this first installment, we turn to Alexis Breen, a professional ballet dancer with Ballet North Texas and a valued member of the AK Dancewear team, for her expert advice on retaining choreography. “Choreography retention is a skill every dancer can master with the right approach,” Alexis shares. Here are her tried-and-true tips to help you succeed.

1. Use Videos as a Resource

“Videos are one of the most powerful tools for learning choreography,” Alexis explains. Whether it’s a rehearsal recording or footage of a performance, watching the choreography can help you understand arm pathways, transitions, and how you fit into the bigger picture. “Don’t just focus on your movements—observe the entire group dynamic,” she advises.

2. Partner with a Friend

Two minds are better than one! “Sometimes, working with a fellow dancer can make all the difference,” Alexis notes. Collaborate with a peer to review steps, clarify tricky sections, and ensure you’re in sync. “It’s great to have someone to bounce ideas off and double-check details,” she adds.

3. Ask Questions

“Never hesitate to ask questions,” Alexis emphasizes. Whether you’re unsure about a sequence or need clarification on a transition, it’s better to speak up. “There’s nothing worse than being confused and staying silent,” she says. “Directors and choreographers appreciate dancers who are eager to get it right.”

4. Break It Down

When facing a long or complex piece, take it one step at a time. “Start with just eight counts,” Alexis suggests. Breaking the choreography into smaller sections makes it more manageable and ensures you fully grasp each part before moving on. “It’s all about building confidence bit by bit,” she says.

5. Practice Full-Out, Always

Whether you’re first or second cast, make the most of your rehearsal time. “Even if it’s not your turn, practice as full-out as possible in the back of the room,” Alexis advises. “This helps your body remember the movements and keeps you engaged.” She cautions against simply marking your arms: “Commit to every detail, even in the background.”

6. Consistent Practice is Key

“Choreography retention isn’t about perfection on day one—it’s about consistent effort,” Alexis explains. Practice regularly at the studio or at home, using every opportunity to refine your steps. “With these tips, you’ll set yourself up for success,” she assures.
