Some weekends become more than an event. They become part of the story.
This Labor Day weekend, 33 dancers traveled to North Texas from across the United States and Mexico for the 5th Annual AK Fall Dancers Event - our largest gathering yet.
What was originally planned as an intimate event kept growing as more dancers and families reached out hoping to join us. We opened a few more spots, then a few more, and ultimately welcomed 33 dancers for two very full days of ballet, creativity, professional experiences and, most importantly, community.
Five years ago, the very first AK Dancers Event began inside the studios of Ballet Conservatory in Lewisville, Texas. So for our fifth year, returning to the same place felt especially meaningful.
Our theme for 2026 was The Story Continues.
And with dancers coming together from near and far, it felt like the perfect way to begin the next chapter.
DAY ONE: LEARN, CREATE, DANCE
We began Sunday where the AK Dancers Event first started: in the ballet studio.
Our dancers joined Ommi P. Leffler for a two-hour ballet technique masterclass accompanied by live pianist Mr. Clark Erickson, a special experience for young dancers who may not have the opportunity to take class with live accompaniment every day.
Ommi brought an extraordinary perspective into the room. A former Soloist with San Francisco Ballet and former Principal Dancer with Ballet San Jose, she shared not only her professional experience, but the details, musicality and artistry that come from a career spent on the professional stage.
But this wasn't simply a ballet masterclass.
After two hours of technique, the dancers were given another challenge: learn original choreography created by Ommi for a dance film, and learn it quickly.
The music had been created and composed specifically for the 5th Annual AK Dancers Event, making the piece something completely unique to this weekend. The dancers had less than an hour to learn Ommi's choreography, rehearse together and prepare to take it from the studio into a professional video shoot.
Then the cameras rolled.
Sam Jones, a professional company dancer with Ballet North Texas, joined us behind the camera as videographer, capturing the choreography and helping transform what had just been learned in the studio into a dance film.
For some of our dancers, this was their very first experience on a professional video shoot. Suddenly, class wasn't only about combinations at the barre or remembering choreography. It was about adapting movement for the camera, working as an ensemble, repeating takes and trusting the dancers around them.
Filming continued beyond the studio and into the AK Dancewear flagship store, bringing another part of the AK world into the project.
By the end of Day One, something that hadn't existed that morning - a piece of music, choreography and a group of dancers from different places - had become something they had created together.
And that was only the first day.
DAY TWO: THE FACES OF WHAT'S NEXT
Monday morning started early at photographer Rhi Lee's studio, where our dancers stepped into an entirely different side of AK Dancewear.
This time, they weren't simply wearing AK.
They were helping us introduce what comes next.
Throughout the day, all 33 dancers stepped in front of the camera for our 2027 AK Dancewear Calendar, becoming part of a project that will live well beyond the weekend. Different groups brought each month to life, giving every dancer a place within the finished calendar, and a real behind-the-scenes experience of a professional dancewear photoshoot.
But the calendar wasn't the only thing happening behind those studio doors.
The dancers were also among the very first to see, wear and photograph pieces from the upcoming AK Lifestyle collection.
The Dancers Event became the setting for the collection's first catalog photoshoot, giving our dancers a first look at a new side of AK before it has even officially launched.
Designed for life beyond the studio, AK Lifestyle carries the comfort, movement and effortless styling dancers expect from AK into the rest of their day. Seeing these pieces come to life for the first time on dancers from our own community made their debut even more meaningful.
For many of the dancers, the day also offered a genuine look behind the scenes of creating a dancewear campaign: unreleased products, styling, professional photography, group shots, waiting for your turn... and all the organized chaos that happens before anyone sees the polished final image.
And, of course, there was still time to make the experience their own.
Each dancer had the opportunity to select favorite AK leotards and skirts for individual photos, creating images that reflected their own personality and style.
Between shoots, the studio became its own little world.
Dancers filmed social content with the AK team, sat down for interviews, laughed, talked and connected with people they may have previously known only through social media, competitions or the AK Dancers community.
And, of course, we made time for pizza, because full days of dancing, creating and laughing together call for good food, and our dancers happily enjoyed every slice.
Those in-between moments have always been one of our favorite parts of this event.
Because the AK Dancers Event was never meant to be only about the photos.
AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF THE STORY
One dancer's journey to this year's event was especially meaningful.
Bella Silva was selected as a recipient of the 2026 AK Dancers Event Scholarship, giving her the opportunity to attend and participate in the full weekend at no cost.
During the event, we sat down with Bella to hear more about her ballet journey, her experiences within the AK community and what receiving the scholarship meant to her.
The scholarship represents an important part of why the AK Dancers Event exists.
Talent and passion exist everywhere, but opportunities don't always reach everyone equally. Through initiatives such as the AK Dancers Event Scholarship, we hope to make some of those opportunities a little more accessible, and give young dancers another room where they can learn, create, grow and belong.
Because ultimately, this weekend isn't about finding the best dancer in the room.
It's about creating a room where dancers can inspire one another.
THE MOMENTS BETWEEN THE MOMENTS
There were masterclasses and cameras. New dancewear and unreleased collections. A custom piece of music. A dance film. A calendar photoshoot. Interviews, content shoots, individual dance poses and portraits, and probably not enough hours in either day.
But five years into this event, we've learned that some of the most important moments aren't the ones on the schedule.
They're watching old friends find each other again when they walk through the door.
They're seeing a dancer arrive knowing almost nobody and leave with new friendships.
They're the conversations happening while everyone waits for their turn in front of the camera.
They're dancers cheering for one another from behind the photographer.
And they're watching young artists learn from accomplished professionals, then turn around and encourage the dancer standing beside them.
That is the part you can't quite plan.
And it's the part we wouldn't trade for anything.
FIVE YEARS LATER, THE STORY CONTINUES
Five years ago, we created the AK Dancers Event because we wanted young dancers to experience something beyond being part of a brand or an ambassador program.
We wanted to create a place to learn, create, connect, dance and belong.
This year brought us right back to the studio where it all began.
But a lot has changed since that first event.
The dancers have grown. New dancers have joined us. Friendships have formed across states and countries. Professional artists have shared their knowledge. Young dancers who once came simply to participate have become part of the story of AK itself.
And this year, 33 dancers filled that room.
For those who were there, we hope these two days become one of those memories you carry with you long after the photos are delivered and the dance film is released.
For those who weren't there this year, perhaps we'll see you in the room one day too.
Five years down.
So many stories already written.
And we're nowhere near finished.
